Clean and Green Ride to School: New Hybrid Buses
This September, many Oconomowoc Area School District students will be riding to and from school in buses that are as “green” as they are yellow. Oconomowoc Transport Company Inc. (OTC) received grant funding from the Wisconsin Office of Energy Independence and Wisconsin Clean Cities to purchase eleven plug-in hybrid school buses. The grant will also fund the construction of a solar-powered fueling station at their bus terminal to keep the hybrids powered-up and ready for use. OTC is leading the State of Wisconsin by participating in the Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program. The goal of this four-year, statewide program is to add greener vehicles to the State of Wisconsin fleets.
With eleven new plug-in hybrid school buses go into service, 25% of the Oconomowoc Transport Company Inc. fleet will be green. The hybrid buses will produce significantly less greenhouse gas emissions, and are projected to be 50% more fuel-efficient. The new hybrid school buses will save the OASD in fuel costs starting in the 2011-2012 academic year and savings will continue for the life of the buses.

At a recent competition sponsored by the Madison-based WEMTA (Wisconsin Educational Media and Technology Association), Oconomowoc high school and intermediate school students made a positive impression with their Podcasts, blogs, and websites.
One judge, a UW-Whitewater professor, asked a 7th grade Nature Hill Intermediate School student if she could use the student’s electronic portfolio as an example to share with her college students demonstrating how a website can showcase an individual’s accomplishments as part of a job search. Congratulations student techies as well as media and technology staff!

Happy Birthday, Greenland Elementary!
May 20 was filled with friends, music, art and celebration as Greenland Elementary School concluded its year-long celebration of 50 Years of Learning.
Former Greenland staff received invitations to attend the special daytime event. They were taken for a tour of the school, visited classrooms, and were part of a special staff luncheon in the library.
At 1 p.m., everyone took part in a school assembly, where student council members lead the introductions. The guests shared memories of Greenland School including what job they performed as the school and their favorite school lunch. The assembly continued with students singing the new school song, a selection of “Why Greenland is Great” created by students, and a "Happy Birthday" chorus to the school.

A beautiful student-created mural was unveiled in the school’s foyer. Greenland Art teacher Tom Beirl sketched out the piece, and every student in the school had a chance to add their own artistic talent. If you look closely, you can even read their names in the foliage of the trees. That evening, families joined the celebration at Fine Arts night featuring art work, student vocal performances and ice-cream treats.
