Into the Woods: A musical with magical touch
The Oconomowoc High School Performing Arts Department is currently working on Stephen Sondheim's classic musical Into the Woods! It is an enchanting musical that weaves familiar childhood fairy tales together with a new story of a childless Baker and his Wife who attempt to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child.

Act One of Into the Woods is family-friendly, lasting approximately one and one-half hours. It is appropriate for all ages, and has an ending that is "happily ever after." You could attend Act I only, and then leave at intermission, feeling as if you have seen a complete 90 minute play!  This is a great option for families with young children who may not want to sit still for nearly three hours. Act Two lasts 45 minutes and is more appropriate for middle school ages and above.

The show runs November 14 through November 21. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 students and seniors. Purchase through the OAC box office or online at www.theOAC.net. Group tickets may be purchased for groups of 10 or more at $10 per ticket.

Haunted High Scares up Money for Education

Haunted High at Oconomowoc Middle SchoolAfter standing empty for more than a year, the former Oconomowoc Middle School now has an ominous new identity: Haunted High. The Oconomowoc Public Education Foundation (OPEF) has transformed the old school into 65,000 sq ft of thrills, chills and terrors that will be open on weekends in October.

All proceeds from Haunted High will benefit the general fund of OPEF, a charitable foundation created in 2007 to allow for private, tax-deductible contributions to the public schools. Funds will be used to provide grants to expand educational opportunities in the Oconomowoc Area School District.

Tickets are $12 for Haunted High, which is open from 6:30 – 10:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday from Oct. 9 – 31, plus Thursday, Oct. 29. Entrance and parking is at the back of the school at 550 E. Forest Street, Oconomowoc. No one under 10 will be admitted, ages 10-13 must be accompanied by adult, and no refunds will be given. Check out all the ghoulish details at www.hauntedhigh.info or on the Facebook page. Volunteers are still needed for the remaining weekends of Haunted High (which is extremely popular!). Jobs include non-acting (taking tickets, directing traffic) and acting roles. To volunteer, e-mail contact@hauntedschool.org.

High School Students Benefit from One Lunch

One lunch at OHSHow could we get more kids involved in activities, and give kids with full schedules extra time to get help with schoolwork? This year Oconomowoc High School adopted a new "One Lunch" schedule, which gives all students and staff an hour in the middle of the day to connect, meet and accomplish what was difficult for students who depended on bus transportation to get to and from school.

Research indicates that students who are more involved at their school through clubs, activities or intramural sports have higher GPAs and are less likely to be truant or have behavioral problems.

Even in the brief time the new schedule has been implemented, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of students belonging to clubs and seeking help from their teachers. Students are able to be part of intramural athletics and are adjusting well and enjoying themselves. And all the students are being fed! Parents, encourage your students to actively take advantage of the many opportunities for help and extracurricular activities available to them during this time. >>Find OHS Club information here.

50 Years of Learning at Greenland Elementary

Star the Mascot at Greenland ElementaryGreenland Elementary School is marking its 50th birthday this year with "Celebrating 50 Years of Learning." Every month, the school will have a special activity. In October, students took part in a school-wide 50-yard-dash. “Star,” the Greenland raccoon mascot, came and ran with the students, encouraging all the runners to do their best, even the staff!

A Playground Painting Day got the whole school involved in painting new playground games on the newly resurfaced playground. Teams of all grade levels helped paint the brightly colored games on our blacktop.

Greenland's 50th anniversaryLater this year, Greenland will host a gathering of former Greenland staff. Please contact Greenland School Principal, Dianna Kresovic at (262) 560-8100 if you are a former staff member, have stories to share about the school or have saved old newsletters and photographs. Greenland has a rich Oconomowoc history that should be celebrated!
